The Addis Ababa University International Humanitarian Law Clinic (AAU IHL Clinic) is a center for learning, research, debate and awareness raising of International Humanitarian Law (IHL).

It was established in Africa’s diplomatic hub – Addis Ababa in 2020, with the aim of highlighting African voices and perspectives in the global IHL discourse.

The AAU IHL Clinic offers a unique opportunity for students to develop their skills and knowledge in IHL through practical applications of legal rules and principles to real-world situations. Students work on projects chosen by the Clinic: such as conflict monitoring, research and publication, writing for the Blog – acquiring a unique experience on IHL in the classroom and beyond.

The AAU IHL Clinic also provides a platform for students, scholars and practitioners to write about and present on issues they deem relevant to the respect of IHL rules in Africa and beyond. The Clinic’s blog is attracting readers from all over the world and has become an important emerging voice in IHL.

The AAU IHL Clinic is committed to promoting the protection of civilians and respect of IHL in the African continent and beyond, and conducts training and advocacy, and dissemination of IHL.
